The Iran Notes on death penalty: A state killing machine

The 30 November 2023, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its member organisation League for the Defence of Human Rights in Iran (LDDHI) published the second of their Iran Notes, a series of short thematic briefing notes that analyse the key aspects and root causes of Iran’s ongoing human rights crisis.

The note analyses the use of the death penalty by Iranian authorities, which fails to comply with Iran’s obligations under international human rights treaties to which it is a state party.

The note examines in particular:
 the broad range of crimes for which the death penalty is prescribed;
 the unfair trials that often result in the imposition of death sentences; and
 the use of capital punishment against children, women, ethnic minorities, and anti-government protesters.
