First step in obtaining release of nine human rights defenders, arbitrarily detained

The Supreme Court in Kinshasa granted temporary release to nine members of ADIVB (association for the defence of the interests of the city of Bandundu) who were arbitrarily detained for seven months for – lawful – human rights activities. The decision was published eight weeks after the hearing, thus in violation of the law.

The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of FIDH and the World Organisation Against Torture has carefully monitored this judicial harassment for several months and hopes that the conditions for their release and acquittal will be eased.
