FIDH believes that the respect of the rights contained in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights is fundemental for peace and international security andmust be the guiding principle of international relations, including trade relations. This principle must be tacken into account not only by States but also by international institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Consequently, FIDH works for the recognition of the primacy of human rights by governments at the time of the negotiation and the adoption of international instruments/ agreements in the field of trade and investment. FIDH has also insisted on the need to integrate a human right approach in development policies, and within international financial institutions.
